A Red Letter Challenge from Jesus: “Abide in me.”
A Red Letter Promise from Jesus: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We spend a lot of time on doing, and it has its place.
“Why do you call me ‘Lord,’ and not do what I tell you to do?” -Jesus
“Faith without works is dead.” -James (Jesus’ half-brother)
BUT sometimes I get so focused on doing that I lose focus on being. WE NEED TO BE WITH JESUS!
When we get to the week of “being” (next week), there will be challenges to mirror some spiritual disciplines that have existed as long as there has been a Christian church: quiet, prayer, Scripture reading, fasting, and so on.
The “being” forms us, and the “doing” is the fruit that is produced. This is how God forms us.
So…how are you doing at being? (See what I did there?)
I’m not naturally great at this. I have to force myself to put these practices into place. For me, they happen best in the morning, or often they don’t happen at all. I need the quiet that only happens when the rest of the world around me is asleep. Even then, there are plenty of distractions.
But, seriously, how great is it that Jesus wants to be with us?! That one of His love languages is quality time?
That’s the promise of eternity. We get to be with the Lord forever. And the best promise for today is that we get to be with Jesus now.
